Product Introduction & Applications

The STD-TE 66 Micro-Scale Abrasion Tester is designed for evaluating the micro-abrasion wear resistance of hard and soft coatings, as well as monolithic materials, using a ball-on-plate configuration. It is also commonly used for coating thickness determination via controlled crater formation.

Product Description

Unlike free-ball micro-abrasion devices where the applied load and rotational speed vary with friction, the STD-TE 66 uses a clamped rotating ball driven by a precision shaft. The coated specimen is mounted on a counterbalanced vertical beam, ensuring accurately defined loads independent of frictional forces.

This results in:

• Precisely controlled loads (0.05–5 N)

• Accurate rotational speed and cycle counting

• Repeatable crater formation for coating thickness measurement

• Integrated high-resolution digital microscope for non-disturbed crater imaging

The wear process creates a circular crater; once the coating is worn through, the inner/outer “bulls-eye” diameters can be measured to calculate coating thickness accurately.
