Do you really know Martindale Abrasion and Pilling Tester?

Martindale Abrasion and Pilling Tester are used to measure the resistance of fabrics to abrasion and pilling. The test is conducted by rubbing a piece of fabric against an abradant surface with a specified force and number of cycles. The number of cycles required to produce a visually detectable change in the fabric is recorded and used to determine the abrasion or pilling resistance of the fabric.

Martindale Abrasion and Pilling Tester 2 common test:

1. Textile abrasion resistance test

The fabric specimens are fixed on a grinding platform and rubbed with a friction cloth immediately adjacent to the grinding head. The abrasion resistance of the textile can be obtained from the degree of breakage, loss of mass and change in appearance of the specimen under the guidance of atomic absorption spectrometry.

The machine can usually be customised with 4, 6 or 9 stations to meet the various needs of the customer. It also allows each station to be tested simultaneously to increase testing efficiency. The machine is equipped with different weights and fixtures and its abrasive heads can be adapted to various European and American standards.

2. Fabric pilling test

This test can be applied to both knitted and woven fabrics. In this process, the textile sample and the rubbing cloth will rub against each other on the abrasive platform, thus creating some geometry. Afterwards, we need to compare the damaged sample with a standard sample.

Depending on the degree of pilling, the samples can be classified into five levels:

Level 1 Severe pilling 

Level 2 somewhat severe pilling 

Level 3 moderate pilling 

Level 4 Slight pilling 

Level 5 No pilling
