The United States releases new standard for protective masks ASTM F3502-2021

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) recently released the organization's first product standard for protective masks in response to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic - ASTM F3502-2021, which is for standards that do not apply to ASTM F2100 ( N95/medical masks) and 42 CFR Part 84 (particulate protective respirators), but mask-related products with certain protective functions.

The ASTM F3502-2021 standard specifies minimum design requirements, performance ratings, labels, reports, etc. for disposable and reusable protective masks.

Submicron particle filtration efficiency and airflow resistance are classified separately, so there are 4 classification combinations:

1. Submicron particle filtration efficiency and airflow resistance are both Level 1 (minimum performance requirements);

2. The filtration efficiency of submicron particles is Level 1, and the airflow resistance is Level 2;

3. The filtration efficiency of submicron particles is Level 2, and the airflow resistance is Level 1;

4. Submicron particle filtration efficiency and airflow resistance are both Level 2.

★Allow mask manufacturers to provide bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) results as supplementary information on the protective performance of masks, but not in place of submicron particle filtration efficiency.
